Government delegations of 34 countries are going to participate in an inauguration ceremony of the XXIV Winter Olympics Games in Beijing. Five European countries together with New Zealand decided not to send high-rank delegations there due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The United States resigned from sending any official representatives because of China’s violations against human rights and declared a boycott of the Olympic Games. The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Japan followed Washington’s decisions. Despite the growing pressure, South Korea did not decide to do the same.
The beginning of the Winter Olympic Games will provide the opportunity for Xi Jinping to hold bilateral meetings with some heads of states including Russian, Argentinian and Polish presidents, the Saudi Arabian heir to the throne, and the sovereign prince of Monaco.
